LINTEC Develops Resin Microneedle Patch

Gentle Stimulation at Multiple Points, Easier to Use than Acupuncture Needles

LINTEC announces the joint development with Teikyo Heisei University of a resin microneedle patch that provides just the right amount of stimulation when applied to the skin. The patch features a proprietary design incorporating multiple fine resin needles. LINTEC and Teikyo Heisei University will continue product evaluation, verifying its utility and undertaking research aimed at improving the product.

New Resin Patches Designed to Stimulate Multiple Points

In 2022, LINTEC established the Next Generation Innovation Group to focus on creating new products and businesses over the medium- to long-term without being constrained by the company's existing business categories, such as adhesive products and specialty papers. As part of its activities, the group has been developing technologies related to the tiny needles known as microneedles. In collaboration with the Institute of Oriental Medicine at Teikyo Heisei University, which conducts research on acupuncture, moxibustion, and other Eastern medicine, the Next Generation Innovation Group has developed a resin microneedle patch with tiny protrusions that deliver just the right amount of stimulation when applied to the skin.

Unlike conventional metal needles, the resin needles are flexible and resistant to breakage. Dozens of resin microneedles measuring less than a millimeter in length are arranged on a circular patch. The microneedles do not penetrate deeply into the skin, allowing the patch to provide moderate stimulation at multiple points. The needles are made from a highly biocompatible resin that is also used in medical applications, and can be safely used by individuals with metal allergies.

Application Shown to Increase Local Blood Flow

A study of 16 adult men, led by Teikyo Heisei University, found an increase in localized blood flow when the resin microneedle patch was applied to the skin. These findings were presented at the Annual Scientific Congress of the Japan Society of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. This increase in blood flow is expected to contribute to the quick improvement of muscle tension, stiffness, inflammation, and other conditions. Looking ahead, LINTEC anticipates that the patches will be used not only in acupuncture and moxibustion clinic treatments, but also for home healthcare settings.

LINTEC will continue to collaborate with outside research institutions and other entities to advance technological development in a range of fields, including healthcare, and work toward practical societal application of the company's research findings.
